| other traits: | Scotties are generally very serious, dignified, reserved and aloof. He may be affectionate to some people, but even with those people it is usually on his terms that the affection occurs. In spite of being aloof, he still wants to be a family member and live most of his life indoors with his family. A Scottie is very sensitive to praise and blame. He is tolerant of strangers and will ignore other dogs on the street unless he is attacked, when he will fight to his last breath, regardless of the odds against him. His nickname, and a well earned one at that, is "die hard". A Scottie tends to shun rough and tumble games and prefers games which appeal to his hunting instincts, such as chasing a ball, "killing" a squeaky toy, etc. His independent spirit may try your patience at times, but to those who appreciate his unique character, he is a friend and companion second to none. A few words of caution. Being bred to "go to ground" and hunt and kill vermin, the Scottie is equipped with very large teeth and strong jaws for a dog his size, and once he decides to attack something, it is very hard to get him to turn it loose. Also, a Scottie cannot swim very well due to his physique. Short legs, with a very compact body and a big head were just not meant for swimming. If you have a pool, you must be very, very sure that he cannot get to it while he is at home alone or unattended. Some Scotties are diggers and will dig up your flowers indiscriminately. | |
