| other traits: | very people oriented, are un-satisifed left alone in a kennel. Love to be with their people, but are also protective of their people and things. Good pack dogs (2 or more) - but if a fight starts in the pack can be dangerous. Good house dogs, will be by your side at all times, follow you around. Are extensive droolers, not for the weak stomached. CAUTION: Dogues are VERY animal aggressive, they must early socializaiton to other animals and people and obedience training. Please only ever buy a Dogue (or any very large protective/dominant breed from a very well-known and reputable breeder) | |
| more kid-friendly info: | Dogues are good people dogs, and are gentle most times with kids but should ALWAYS be supervised. Children can poke and prod and they are tolerant of it - to a point. Can be dangerous to small animals, are known to kill small animals without intending to. | |
| limiting disorders: | Not for "jogging" or running, good walking dogs but do not usually have the endurance for long jogs or walks. Limit heavy play and exercise during first few years while the dog is developing bone. Canine Hip Dysplasia (CHD) is big problem! Be careful, make sure parents are screened for any breed disorders. Be careful with small animals. | |
| non-limiting disorders: | Canine Hip Dysplasia, luxating patellas, thyroid problems, heart problems, epilepsy, Progressive Retinal Atrophy and other eye problems (cherry eye, etc), von Wilebrands disease. | |
| breed quirks: | Lots of Dander. Are very stubborn. Are very strong! Very thick headed. Grow very fast, with the mind of a puppy at 6 months and a 100 lb body is not uncommon. Lots of drool!! | |
| other info | Very people oriented, yet must stress animal aggressiveness. Dogues were bred to fight other dogs and animals, and it is a very strong instinct in the breed. Very large breed, very strong, need to keep dog under control at all times. Not the breed for everyone. Many health problems. Should be temperament tested and obedience trained! | |
